Rally to encourage eye donation

FOR A CAUSE: Chennai Mayor M. Subramanian leads a rally organised on Sunday as part of the eye donation fortnight.

CHENNAI: Scores of children and adults donned yellow caps and walked on the Marina Beach carrying placards with messages to encourage eye donation. The rally was organised by Rajan Eye Care Hospital and the Rotary Club of T. Nagar, as part of the eye donation fortnight celebrations.

The fortnight is an annual programme coordinated by the Central Government, the Eye Bank Association of India and member eye banks.

As part of the awareness campaign, from Saturday, Rotary Rajan Eye Bank, will hold several activities up to September 8. An inter-school painting contest is to be organised at the hospital in T. Nagar on September 2.

During the fortnight free corneal transplant surgeries would be performed and symposiums and seminars on corneal transplantation conducted in offices, factories, schools and colleges, said Mohan Rajan, medical director of the hospital.

The rally that wound its way from Light House to Anna Square on Sunday morning, was flagged off by Chennai Corporation Mayor M. Subramanian. He praised the hospital and the Rotary Club for its activities and walked some distance with the organisers. Rotary district governor A.S. Venkatesh was also present.
