This has reference to the news analysis “Congress: mum’s the word for vote bank” (The Hindu 13/8). The writer has analysed the recent attack on Taslima Nasreen brilliantly which is an eye opener to the State Government as well as the ruling Congress leaders. If the State Government responds benignly every time to such vandalism and hooliganism, what is the fate of the society?

Mistaken identity
The photograph on Page 5 of District Plus of The Hindu dated 20.8.07 is not aloe vera but another similar looking plant of the same species. The photo belongs to a plant called “chagamatta” in Telugu.
The district edition is really useful not only to students but grown ups as well.

Remove Madigas from SC list
I appeal to the State Government to remove the Madiga community from the list of Scheduled Castes and consider them as backward class on the basis of their traditional occupation which is leather dressing.
The Government provided necessary funds for LIDCAP which was started to help such castes. Malas have not obtained such funds from the State Government. Majority of them are daily wage earners.
They do not have traditional occupation like that of Madigas.
Therefore it is justifiable to remove the Madigas from the SC list and include them in the backward class list.
