4 lakh cases settled in Lok Adalats

BANGALORE: The Lok Adalats held under the Karnataka Legal Services Authority have settled four lakh cases and covering an overall compensation of over Rs. 489 crore in the last 10 years, according to Venkatesha Kulkarni, a Dharwad-based lawyer.

Prof. Kulkarni told The Hindu on the sidelines of a workshop on legal awareness for autorickshaw drivers here on Sunday that 1997 to 2007, the Lok Adalats had heard and settled disputes pertaining to land acquisition and motor vehi cle accidents (compensation).

The adalats had got a compensation of Rs. 366.70 crore (land acquisition cases) and Rs. 123. 58 crore (motor accident cases) to its clients, he said.

The 15,000 Lok Adalats held from April 1997 to November 2006 had settled 74,654 civil cases, including 4,322 bank related cases and 3,539 land acquisition cases, he said.
