THANJAVUR: The Uriyadi Utsavam of Sri Venkatesa Perumal Temple at Varagur in Thanjavur district will be held from August 29 to September 7, according to a press release issued here on Saturday.
During the festival, there will be Chaturveda Parayanam and reading of Srimad Bhagavatham in the morning and evening. Samparadaya bhajans and Divyanama sankirthan will be conducted every day. Eminent bhagavathars will participate. On Janmashtami, which falls on September 4, there will be Upanyasam on Krishna Jananam from 10.30 p.m. to 00.12 hrs. During the festival days, the utsavar will be brought out in various alankarams.
On September 5, the utsavar, decorated in the form of Balakrishna with golden Bennaithazhi, will be taken in procession to the Kalindi in the outskirts of the village to the accompaniment of nagaswaram, Veda parayanam and bhajans.
There will be a special Thirumanjanam to the idol with Mahanyasa Japam and Rurakrama Parayanam. At midnight, the idol, seated on a silver kedayam and decorated with Yuva Krishna, will be taken in procession. The devotees will form three groups. One group will do angapradkshina from the river to the temple courtyard. The second will participate in Edayar vesham headed by the Chief Yadavar belonging to Rayan groups.
The third will participate in chappanis, a race in which all participants set on a square frame in that position move forward. After completion of Uriyadi and “Vazhukku maram eruthal,” the idol will be taken back to the temple early in the morning.
Temple authorities have appealed to people to participate in the festival and receive the ever lasting blessings of Varagur Sri Venkatesa Perumal.
