Resort to non-violent methods of agitation: Minister
Special Correspondent
VELLORE: Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu has appealed to political parties, organisations and the public to resort to non-violent methods of agitation for expressing their protest against any decision of the government or to demand anything from the government.
Inaugurating the 150th anniversary celebrations of the ‘1857 First War of Independence,’ organised jointly by the Field Publicity Office, Vellore and the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity, Bangalore here on Sunday, Mr. Velu referred to the rail roko agitation resorted to by political parties and trade bodies in Salem, Tirupur, Coimbatore and others places in Tamil Nadu demanding the creation of the Salem Railway Division. He said he hated rail roko and road blockade agitations, but political parties and other organisations resorted to blocking trains and roads for getting their demands addressed. “But, I have the responsibility of operating trains,” he said, and appealed to political parties and other organisations and members of the public to follow the example set by Gandhiji by resorting to non-violent forms of agitation. “Gandhiji has shown the way and proved that we can achieve success in our struggle only through non-violent means,” he said. The State Government could prepare a proposal after compiling details and collecting corroborative documents with the help of historians through the Vellore Collector and forward the same to the Centre.
