Teresa’s letters reveal struggle with faith

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The crisis of faith was God’s way of leading Mother Teresa towards the path of purification and transformation, Sister Nirmala, who is her successor at the Missionaries of Charity, said here on Sunday.

The day marked the 97th birth anniversary of Mother Teresa.

Mother Teresa’s struggle with faith was revealed in some of her letters which have been compiled in the form of a new edition by Rev. Brian Kolodiejchuk, the postulator for the cause for her sainthood, under the title “Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light.”

“The exposure of this struggle with faith is in no way required for her canonisation but now that it has come to light, I am sure this will help to ensure the process,” Sunita Kumar, a close associate of Mother Teresa, Sunita Kumar, told The Hindu.

The late Pope John Paul II had begun the process of the beatification of Mother Teresa shortly after her death. In 2003, she was declared “blessed” after the Vatican recognised as a miracle her healing of a woman. A second miracle is required for her to proceed towards canonisation and sainthood.

“The crisis of faith only reinforces the fact that Mother had the faith in God which led her to continue serving the poor.” Ms. Kumar said.

The letters of Mother Teresa, written to confessors, carry confessions of her doubts.
