TAMBARAM: Road accidents are on the rise in the southern suburbs of Chennai in spite of the police stepping up its drive against vehicles violating traffic rules.
In the Tambaram Traffic Police (Enforcement) jurisdiction 126 people were killed in road accidents last year and so far in 2007, around 80 people have died in accidents. There has been a severe toll of lives in the past two weeks in the suburbs as a number of accidents were reported from different areas.
On Friday, a 19-year-old youth died on the spot after being hit by a rashly driven lorry on Medavakkam Main Road at Madipakkam. The victim, Daniel Richard, sustained injuries on the head and abdomen when he came under the wheels of the lorry.
