BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court has stayed the action of the State Government in cancelling the maintenance and repair contract it had given to the highest bidder for upkeep of the Karnataka choultry in the pilgrim town of Tirumala in Andhra Pradesh. The State’s choultry, with more than 76 rooms, is located close to the Srinivasa temple atop the Tirumala Hills. Several pilgrims and others had complained about the bad state of affairs of the choultry and had sought government intervention to improve the condition. The State then called for tenders for three years to repair and maintain the building. Eight tenders were submitted of which two were shortlisted. One of them submitted a bid for over Rs. 1 crore which was accepted by the Government. The other party, who had bid a little less than Rs. 1 crore, brought to the notice of the Government that the winning bidder did not have all the qualifications. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam Board wrote to the State Government stating that award of the contract might create law and order problems.
