BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA), which functions under the aegis of the State High Court, had taken note of rising incidence of physical and mental harassment of students by teachers and other school staff. It directed the State Government to expeditiously initiate remedial steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents. V. Gopal Gowda, Senior Judge of the Karnataka High Court and executive chairman of the KSLSA, on Monday convened a meeting of officials of the departments of Women and Child Welfare and Education on the High Court premises to discuss the issue. He impressed upon officials to initiate steps to educate teachers against corporal punishment and to take up awareness programmes for the teachers and staff. Mr. Gopal Gowda later told The Hindu that the KSLSA had taken note of the “harassment” meted out to Sangeeta, a 11-year-old by her teachers at Goreguntepalya in Bangalore, and also other similar incidents. The KSLSA plan s to take up a programme to make teachers aware of their rights and duties.
