Kolkata: Chettinad Vidyashram and Vel’s Vidyashram from Chennai were among the 31 schools that were given this year’s British Council International School Awards (ISA), an accreditation scheme for schools with an international curriculum, here on Monday. Introduced in 2003
The awards, which were introduced in India in 2003, provide accreditation for a period of three years to those schools whose curriculum includes joint projects with other countries, particularly the United Kingdom. The schools that won the award for their activities in the academic year 2006-2007 include Apeejay School, Salt Lake School, Lakshmipat Singhania Academy and St. James School from Kolkata, besides others from New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ajmer, Panipat, Aurangabad and Bangalore, according to a British Council communiqué. While the award did not entail any financial incentive, it was meant to encourage schools to develop international linkages and develop best practices that might, in future, lead to student exchange as well as teacher training programmes. “A dossier of evidence, concerning the international projects on various school subjects taken up by the schools, is examined by a panel of members, including educationists and British Council employees, to determine the final awardees,” said one of the programme coordinators. The ISA scheme operates in nursery, primary and secondary schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland as well.
