Cricketers should not suffer: court

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Observing that the interests of cricketers should not suffer in the fight between the Indian Cricket League (ICL) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Delhi High Court on Monday restrained public sector companies Indian Oil Corporation and Air India from taking any action against their employee-cricketers who had severed ties with the Board or were intending to do so to join ICL.

Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul restrained the two companies from taking any action against their players when counsel for ICL, Harish Salve, informed the court that each company had issued notices on one of its players, seeking explanations for their decision.

Mr. Justice Kaul in an interim order on a suit filed by Essel Sports Pvt. Ltd., the promoter of ICL, charging BCCI with coercing players not to join the League, directed the companies not to take action against the players till the disposal of the suit.

The court fixed September 28 for further hearing.
