PUDUCHERRY: Animal rights activists will be pained by this news. The temple elephant of Sri Manakula Vinayakar Temple, Lakshmi, was kept waiting for more than an hour on Easwaran Koil Street as a carelessly parked car blocked the entrance to the pachyderm’s shelter. The elephant, which had gone around the town along with the deity, Lord Manakula Vinayakar, as part of the ongoing Brahmotsavam festival, had decided to retire a bit early in the evening. Its mahout had brought it to the shelter by 8 p.m. but since the car, the owner of which could not be spotted anywhere, was blocking the entrance the elephant was made to stand for an hour. Lakshmi’s feet started aching and it was seen moving from side to side. The car had been parked despite the fact that it was a ‘no parking’ area. The driver of the car came by 9 p.m. and gave a limp apology for causing the elephant inconvenience. Talk about being insensitive.
