BHUBANESWAR: For their significant contribution to Oriya language and literature, several literary luminaries of the State were honoured with awards and felicitations by the Orissa Sahitya Akademi here on Tuesday. The Atibadi Jagannath Das award for 2006, State’s highest honour, was conferred on former professor of Berhampur University Sudarsan Acharya, an acclaimed critic, translator and editor. The award carries a cash of Rs. 25,000 besides a plaque and a citation. Twelve senior litterateurs were felicitated on the occasion for the year 2006. They were Bishnu Charan Mohanty, Subodh Kumar Chatterjee, Prafulla Chandra Patnaik, Rabindra Kumar Praharaj, Hadibandhu Mirdha, Arabinda Mohapatra, Bhagaban Nayak Barma, Sabitri Devi, Krushna Prasad Mohapatra, Nityananda Nayak, Bipin Behari Khamari and Purnamasi Jani. The akademi awards for the years 2003 and 2004 were also presented to 18 writers on the occasion in nine categories. The awardees of 2003 included Shanti Mohapatra (novel), Sadananda Tripathy (short story), Gopal Krushna Rath (poetry), Mihir Kumar Meher (drama and one act play), Sulochana Das (essay and criticism), Hrudananda Ray (biography and travelogue), Suryamani Khuntia (translation), Birakishore Padhi (children’s literature) and Narayan Prasad Singh (lyrics). Similarly, Rashmi Roul, Rajanikanta Mohanty, Nrusingha Kumar Rath, Dilliswar Moharana, Baishnab Charan Mohanty, Subash Chandra Mishra, Kanan Mishra, Harihar Shukla and Gurukrushna Goswami were the winners of the awards for 2004 for novel, short story, poetry, drama and one act play, essay and criticism, biography and travelogue, translation, children’s literature and lyrics. Each of the awards carries a cash of Rs.10,000 besides citations. Jnanapith awardee poet Sitakant Mohapatra, Culture Minister Surya Narayan Patro, akademi president and eminent poet Deepak Mishra and Culture Secretary Gopinath Mohanty were present during the award presentation ceremony.
