Feast time: Monkeys enjoying an ‘Onasadya’ arranged by the employees of Gandhigram on Wayanad Ghat Road on Tuesday.
Nearly 100 monkeys partook of the ‘Onasadya’ (Onam feast) prepared by the staff of Gandhigramam and served at two points along the ghat road to Wayanad on Tuesday. The monkeys approached the feast served on plantain leaf without any sign of fear and munched away happily. The ‘sadya’ for them comprised nine types of fruits, including grapes, guava, apple and different types of banana, a ‘payasam’ prepared by mixing rice and jaggery, and some ‘upperi’ (chips) and ‘sarkara upperi’ (chips coated with jaggery). M. Devadas, managing director, Gandhigramam, Wayanad, and the staff of the Gandhigramam have been serving the feast to the monkeys during Onam since 2004. The staff of the Gandhigramam donated a day’s salary to arrange the feast. The monkeys often approach vehicles and grab at any food thrown to them. “Earlier there was a monkey which used to attack travellers. But it is no longer seen and the monkeys now are friendly,” Mr. Devadas says. But speeding vehicles often become a death-trap for these monkeys. Mr. Devadas says he has submitted a petition to the Wayanad District Collector to make arrangements for slowing down vehicles at these points along the road and also warn travellers against throwing food to these animals.
