Lull after brisk business

The city wore a deserted look as many shops downed the shutters on the day of ‘Chathayam.’

It will be business as usual from Wednesday, said a grocery store owner. The wayside hawkers did a brisk business on Uthradom.

The price of flowers spiralled and peaked during the three days prior to Thiruvonam. Most women who sell leafy vegetables like spinach (‘cheera’) grow flowers during Onam.

Even as it rained on Sunday, the sellers, who were commanding a high price for most items, quickly brought it down to return home.
