55-year-old gives birth to twins

Special Correspondent

Chennai: A private hospital in Chennai claimed on Monday that a 55-year-old woman treated by the hospital for infertility had delivered twin babies.

Dr. T. Kamaraj, Medical Director, Akash Fertility Centre and Hospital, Vadapalani, said Brinda and her husband Alagappan from Karnataka had come to the clinic in November 2006 seeking treatment for infertility. Ms. Brinda had attained menopause when she was 45 and her husband’s sperm count was low.

According to Jeyarani Kamaraj, infertility specialist who treated Brinda, donor eggs were fused with the husband’s sperm through the intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection process. And after the embryo was formed it was transferred to the mother’s womb. The twin babies – both boys – were delivered through a caesarean operation on Monday morning. Doctors said both the children and the mother were doing well.
