A Muslim girl in ‘hejab’ (headscarf) turned on the curiosity of a large weekend gathering in Malappuram when she led a Carnatic music programme as part of the District Tourism Promotion Council’s Onam celebrations. Eleven-year-old Hanna Yasir, from Vadakkangara near Mankada, stole the hearts of all with her carnatic vocals. A sixth standard student of Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Mankada, Hanna’s association with music started as a child. Trained under Mankada Damodaran and his son Shyam, Hanna has already sung and acted in music albums such as ‘Vellaripraavukal’ and ‘Oru Kilikkonchal.’ Hanna had won several prizes in folk dance, light music and recitation in regional arts festivals. Daughter of K. Yasir and A.P. Shakkira, Hanna is a member of Paviham Orchestra, Palakkad, and Satkala, Perinthalmanna. Abdul Latheef Naha
