Onam in name only?

Television rather than tradition dominated the Onam festivities. Vignettes of tradition, a mish-mash of Onam memories of the rich and the famous, a host of movies, movie-based programmes and comedy shows dished out by television channels – this was Onam for most urbanites. It would seem that if you have seen one, you have seen them all because the programme formatting of channels has become too repetitive and predictable. As one put it, the cloying images of the R 16;kasavu’ and jewellery clad anchors and the constant chatter about the traditional values of Onam have begun to wear down viewers.
