TIRUPATTUR: The Tirupattur Sub-Division police took scores of the CPI (M) cadres into custody for staging a protest against hike in prices of essential commodities near the taluk office here on Tuesday.

The cadres, who gathered in large numbers near the Tirupattur taluk office, shouted slogans against the Centre and the State Governments for not taking steps to bring the hike in prices under control. Immediately 10 minutes after the protest began, the Tirupattur sub-division police took the protestors into custody. There were equal participation of men and women.

The protestors further wanted the Centre to evolve a scheme whereby farmers got loan for a low rate of interest. The farmers should be in a position to get a profitable margin on their produce sold in the market. International companies such as Wallmart and domestic companies such as Reliance should not be allowed in retail business. The Centre and the State should immediately solve unemployment problem.

The protestors wanted the Centre and the State Government to assure 33 per cent reservation for women in the Parliament and Assembly.

The food-for-work scheme should be extended to all districts without any discrimination and the Centre and the State should take action against any reported maladministration while implementing the scheme.

Further, the Centre should review the latest nuke deal with America and remove clauses that were not beneficial to the country.

The protestors in custody were released later in the evening.
