BHOPAL: Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has said that the Government will seek public support and make every effort to ensure enrolment of each and every child in Madhya Pradesh in a school. A special scheme would be launched for this purpose and arrangements would be made for rehabilitation and education of destitute children, the Chief Minister added.

Mr. Chauhan was speaking at the inauguration of “Disha” a special programme aimed at promoting education among destitute children. It was launched on Monday by the Bhopal district administration, State School Education Department, the Bhopal Division of West-Central Railway and voluntary organisations.

Distributing study material and kits to 50 destitute children, the Chief Minister said that children subsisting on petty labour and even begging would benefit from the residential bridge course introduced by the School Education Department.

Mr. Chauhan said he had himself taken up the responsibility of bringing up 12 destitute children at Vidisha in 1991. According to him, many children become drug addicts and take to crime due to socio-economic reasons.

“It is the responsibility of the Government to ensure rehabilitation of such children on top priority,” he said, adding that earnest steps are needed to ensure that not a single child is forced to beg.

State Finance Minister Raghavji said Disha would help the destitute children overcome their difficulties and lead a better life.

School Education Minister Laxman Singh Gaud said a firm initiative had been taken by the Chief Minister to help the children in distress. Facilities like medical care, free meals, housing, study and sports material would be provided to these children under the Disha programme.
