Diarrhoea shows sign of decline

Special Correspondent

Anganwadi workers to be deployed in affected areas

A four-member experts team holds talks with officials

Union Minister blames State Government

BHUBANESWAR: As diarrhoea and cholera cases showed little sign of decline in Koraput, Rayagada and Kalahandi districts of Orissa, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday said volunteers would be appointed to make people aware about sanitation and hygiene in the affected areas.

Talking to presspersons here, Mr. Patnaik said Anganwadi workers will also be pressed into service in the cholera affected districts to help the authorities in taking care of patients. He also said that all drinking water sources will be disinfected in order to prevent further spread of cholera.

As work was not available to the people in the tribal-dominated blocks which were witnessing large number of deaths due to diarrhoea and cholera in the recent weeks, social security schemes will be extended to the affected families. In another development, a four-member team of experts from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases that visited the affected areas held discussions with the senior officials of the Health Department here.

They suggested that steps should be taken to prevent cholera and diarrhoea from spreading to surrounding areas. Meanwhile, criticism has started growing against the Naveen Patnaik Government. While Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss blamed the State Government in New Delhi on Tuesday for not taking adequate measures to contain various diseases in the backward KBK region, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly J.B. Patnaik criticised the Government for its inept handling of the situation. The Opposition Leader said that hunger and contaminated water had caused the large number of deaths in the cholera-hit blocks.

KORAPUT: Top Congress leaders led by former chief minister J.B.Patnaik on Tuesday visited diarrhoea-hit areas of Puhundi, Kadapadar, Kucheipadar,Tikiri and Maikanch villages of Kashipur block in Rayagada district on Tuesday. Another delegation of the Congress team led by PCC president Jayadev Jena will visit the affected areas in Koraput district on Wednesday.
