BANGALORE: To provide an opportunity for students to understand and internalise basic mathematical concepts, Sishya School, Hosur, set up a math lab on its premises. The lab was inaugurated by Ashok Ganguly, Chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, on Friday. Initially, the teachers of the school wondered what they could make children do in a math lab that they could not do in a regular classroom. But, their quest in this direction coupled with their persistence to explore new dimensions helped them transform notions. “The lab will enable students to verify or discover mathematical properties and facts, thereby building their interest and confidence in learning the subject,” said principal Vansanthi Thyagarajan. By participating in the process of learning, they not only become autonomous learners, but will also be able to relate mathematical concepts with every day life. “We wish to encourage our students to think, discuss with each other and the teacher, ” she said. The lab is well-equipped with storage units to facilitate quick and easy retrieval. The records and other necessary stationery are also placed in the lab to enable smooth conduct and recording of the activities. There is also an audio-visual facility to support the activities conducted in the lab.
