PUDUCHERRY: General secretary of the All India Congress Committee V. Narayanasamy on Monday urged the Railway Ministry to take early steps to implement a railway project linking Puducherry with Chennai along the East Coast. He told reporters here that the proposal had already been under consideration of the Ministry. The project acquired importance in view of large tourist inflow to Puducherry, he said, asking Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and Minister of States for Railways R. Velu to expedite its implementation. The demand would be highlighted during the debate on the Railway supplementary budget, he added. Referring to the recent laying of foundation stone for the new broad gauge line between Tindivanam in Villupuram district and Nagari in Andhra Pradesh, he said the railway line should be extended to Puducherry. He called for action against the private medical colleges which had not been earmarking 50 per cent of the seats to the Government quota. Barring a couple of medical colleges in the private sector, other colleges had not fulfilled their obligations. Reiterating his demand for derecognising the private professional colleges which had been collecting fees over the amount fixed by the State Government, Mr. Narayanasamy asked the Government to emulate Tamil Nadu in taking action against the college managements. He urged the State Government to strictly adhere to procedures while recruiting persons for the Government Medical College through the Employment Exchange. He had already taken up the issue with the Chief Secretary in the wake of receipt of complaints that most of the personnel who had already been recruited were from a particular Assembly segment, he said. Mr. Narayanasamy also asked the Chief Secretary to conduct a probe to ascertain whether qualified persons had been appointed for various posts. Failure on the part of the Government to adhere to the recruitment norms would create apprehensions among the people.
