PUDUCHERRY: The Communist Party of India (CPI) here on Monday cautioned the Government against “delaying” the process of redistribution of surplus land. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, national council member of the CPI R. Viswanathan and district secretary of the party N. Kalainathan said around 600 hectares of surplus land, acquired by the Government through land reform measures, had not been redistributed. The Government’s “failure” in this regard had led to illegal sale of these acquired lands through real estate agencies, Mr. Viswanathan said, adding that in some places, houses had already been constructed. He also asked the Government to expedite the cases with regard to land disputes in the courts. If early steps were not taken, an intensified agitation, on the model of the one conducted in Andhra Pradesh, would be launched in the Union Territory, he said. Though the State Government had restored the free rice scheme for the people having red ration cards, it had not been implemented in many places, Mr. Kalainathan said. Despite the Government’s promise to provide seven items of essential articles through the public distribution system (PDS), they had not been distributed in several areas. In some places, the essential articles were distributed through fair price shops, but the price was on a par with the rates that prevailed in the open market, he alleged. Denying that the CPI was posing problems to the smooth functioning of the Government through agitations, the CPI leaders said their party was only voicing people’s demands. Mr. Viswanathan asked the Government to convene an all-party meeting to explain the reasons for non-implementation of various schemes.
