Rs.57.07 crore collected between 1995 and 2003 ‘AAI has not disclosed details of the fee utilisation’
THALASSERY: The People’s Council for Civil Rights (PCCR) has urged the Central Government to come out with a White Paper on the utilisation of Rs.57.07 crore collected as users’ fee from international embarking passengers at the Calicut airport. The PCCR, in a resolution, appealed to the Prime Minister and the Civil Aviation Minister to inform the public of the utilisation of the users’ fee levied between October 1995 and August 2003 as per a memorandum of understanding signed between the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and the Malabar International Airport Development Society (MIADS) for payment of interest on the amount raised by the latter for the expansion and development of the airport runway. The levy of the fee was suspended between July 2, 1998 and August 10, 1998 following protests. It was eventually terminated on August 9, 2003. The memoranda to the Prime Minister and the Civil Aviation Minister, prepared at the meeting chaired by PCCR president T. Asafali, disclosed that a total Rs.57,07,11,375 was collected from 12,72,011 passengers. It also said the AAI had not disclosed the details of the utilisation of the users’ fee. PCCR members P.M. Mohanan, Vijith Viju, Biju V. Joseph and C. Jayasooryan spoke at the meeting. The meeting also decided to hold a major campaign on the Right to Information Act in Wayanad on September 11.
