THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government of India Notaries All India Forum has asked the State Government to refrain from appointing more notaries. General secretary of the Forum Mathew P. Thomas said in a statement here on Tuesday that the Centre had increased the number of notaries allowed to Kerala from 375 to 563. But there were already over 750 notaries in the State at present. In 2001, the Notaries Act was amended to impose a ceiling on the number of notaries. The High Court had declared that the ceiling need not stand in the way of renewing the appointment of existing notaries. The previous Government had tried to make fresh appointments. The court had also declared that the ceiling was applicable to fresh appointments. Moves were afoot to appoint 240 more persons. The district committees of the CPI(M) had already nominated names for all but 60 of these posts.
