“Efforts on to check illegal sand mining”

CHENNAI: Public Works Department Minister Durai Murugan on Tuesday said the government was taking steps to curb illegal sand quarrying in the State.

The government would not hesitate to take action against anyone involved in illegal sand mining, he said.

Some people launching agitations citing illegal sand mining as a pretext were only posing difficulties to people, he said in a statement here. Refuting allegations of large scale illegal sand mining, he said the revenue earned from quarrying was an indicator. In 2006-07, this was Rs.130.92 crore compared to Rs.74.64 crore earned in 2005-06, when the AIADMK was in power. — Special Correspondent
