Correspondent

Official says it would have died a week ago.

VIZIANAGARAM: Putrefied carcass of an elephant was found at Darsi in Iridi panchayat of G.L.Puram mandal by some tribals and reported to forest officials on Monday. Divisional Forest Officer B. Ramana Babu said on Tuesday that the elephant would have died a week ago.

He said Assistant Directors (Animal Husbandry) Srinivas and Muralidhar were being taken to the interior village for conducting post-mortem at the spot.

The cause of death would be known only after that, he added.

A poclain was also sent for digging a pit and burying the carcass there itself, the DFO said.

It may be recalled that a herd of wild elephants had entered tribal hamlets and killed four persons.

Forest officials successfully drove away the herd on Monday.
