It is being held for the first time in Chamarajanagar district
MYSORE: The first Kannada Sahitya Sammelan of Chamarajanagar district will be held on September 17 and September 18. Writer and critic Krishnamurthy Hanur has been selected as the president of sammelan. Speaking to The Hindu, president, district unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat Maleyuru Guruswamy said that the district unit could not conduct the sammelan even after 10 years of formation of the district. The major reason was tha t the district did not have an in-charge Minister. “Despite not having a district in-charge Minister, we thought of conducting the sammelan once. But we were forced to abandon the plan in view of the abduction of Nagappa by forest brigand Veerappan. When we tried for the second time, Minister Raju Gowda died. Now, H.S. Mahadeva Prasad is the Minister for Kannada Culture and district in-charge. We have decided to hold the sammelan on a grand scale,” he said. The president of the sammelan would be taken in a procession, he said. The reception committee of the sammelan was planning to invite, either Chandrashekar Kambar or U.R. Ananthamurthy to inaugurate the sammelan. “As this is the first sammelan after the formation of the district, we wanted to make it a memorable event. It has been planned to organise a seminar on the problems being faced by the people in the district. Issues such as perennial drought, the plight of farmers, water scarcity, delay in the implementation of Kabini II Stage, illegal mining and environmental issues will be discussed. Three experts will participate in the seminar,” he said. As many as 10 achievers from the district would be felicitated. It had been planned to bring out a 450-page souvenir containing information on the district. To make the sammelan a success, eight sub-committees have been formed. The district in-charge Minister heads the reception committee.
