‘Mechanism’ may have eight members
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: With the Left-Congress meetings over the past two days trying to break the impasse over the India-United Staes civilian nuclear deal and agreeing to set up a political mechanism to address the concerns of the Left parties, the broad contours of such a mechanism are emerging.
Indications on Tuesday from the government sources are that the “political mechanism” being discussed between the Left and the Congress leaders will have at least eight members — three each from the Congress and the Left parties and two from the Congress allies.
Highly placed sources said the government would proceed further on nuclear deal negotiations only after the proposed committee completes its labours within the next few days.
If India wanted to discuss India-specific safeguards negotiations, it would have to make a formal request to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), sources said pointing out that no such request had yet been made.
IAEA meeting
Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission Anil Kakodkar will attend the IAEA meeting in Vienna next month representing India as a member-country.
The Left has objected to this saying the government should not take the next step for operationalising the nuclear deal and should put it on hold till the proposed mechanism has evaluated all implications and objections.
