TAMBARAM: The southern suburbs of Chennai will have four people representing them in the Legislative Assembly in the near future.
The suburbs, extending from St. Thomas Mount to Perungalathur and Tiruvanmiyur to Sholinganallur, were represented by two MLAs — Alandur and Tambaram constituencies.
Following the completion of the delimitation exercise recently, two new constituencies — Pallavaram and Sholinganallur — will be carved out of the existing constituencies.
As a result, Tambaram, one of the largest constituencies at present with close to eight lakh voters, will be reduced to a shadow of its past size.
Earlier, parts of Tiruvanmiyur and Velachery too formed a part of this constituency.
In addition, 23 of the 25 village panchayats of the St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union were part of it.
And among the 13 Town Panchayats coming within Kancheepuram district of Chennai Metropolitan Area, nine of them came under the Tambaram constituency.
