Minister, MLAs visit Tirupur knitwear, spinning units

TIRUPUR: Members of the consultative committee for industry from Puducherry, led by Industries and Electricity Minister V. Vaithilingam visited various garment and textile mills in Tirupur on Tuesday. Mr. Vaithiligam said that the objective of the trip was to study various aspects to improve three State-owned textile mills in Puducherry. Interacting with the garment exporters and manufacturers for domestic markets at the South India Hosiery Manufacturers Association (SIHMA) and the Tirupur Exporters’ Association separately, Mr. Vaithilingam invited the entrepreneurs to set up garment units to provide employment in Puducherry. He told reporters that they would study various practices adopted in textile mills Tirupur and Coimbatore regions to reduce losses and enhance productivity of the State-owned mills in Puducherry. The SIHMA president Mohan P. Kandasamy traced the history of the hosiery industry of Tirupur and assured them all help. The TEA president, A. Sakthivel, who is also the chairman of APPTEX Manpower Development Services, promoted by IL&FS and TEA, announced that an apparel training centre would be opened in Puducherry. Responding to the plea to start a garment unit, Mr. Sakthivel assured the delegation that a TEA member would be asked to open a garment factory on a trial basis if they provided a 20,000 sq ft building. The delegation comprising 10 MLAs visited Netaji Apparel Park in New Tirupur and several spinning mills. The team would visit textile units in Coimbatore on Wednesday.
