‘Schemes will remain on paper’

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The former Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday criticised Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy for laying foundation stones for a plethora of development schemes across the State.

At a press conference here, the Congress MLA who represents Sathanur constituency in Bangalore Rural district said all the schemes would remain on paper since they had neither administrative nor financial sanction. The exercise was aimed at gaining cheap popularity for the Chief Minister who would be stepping down from office in October, he said.

Mr. Shivakumar expressed displeasure over the Chief Minister’s programme in Sathanur on Thursday to laying the foundation stone of a bridge across the Cauvery to link M.M. Hills with Sangam. “Neither the local people nor the local leaders have asked for the bridge,” he said. The bridge was meant to provide a road link to a proposed hydel power plant to be built by a private power company.

According to the original schedule, the programme at Sathanur was slated for August 27 when a large number of legislators left on a trip to China, he said.

“I refrained from going on the trip since the Chief Minister would have stated that the local legislator was absent and that he (Mr. Kumaraswamy) cared more for the constituency. Now that the programme has been scheduled for August 30, I will attend it.”

Mr. Shivakumar said the people of the region were aware of the game plans of the Chief Minister and his father, the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, who had represented Kanakapura Lok Sabha constituency earlier.
