CHENNAI: There is an immediate need to set up efficient trauma care centres on all National Highways to help accident victims, and technology should be harnessed for this purpose, G. Madhavan Nair, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation, and Secretary, Department of Space, said on Monday.

Recalling a fatal road accident near Tirupati this afternoon in which one of his colleagues was killed and another seriously injured, Mr. Nair said more trauma care vans and institutions were needed to rush support to accident victims.

“Embedded systems should be deployed in vehicles to raise an alarm when a road accident happens and give adequate warning,” he said, while delivering the convocation address at the 16th convocation of the Dr M.G.R. University. Awareness had to be created among all sections of society about road regulations, he added.

In the field of engineering, convergent technologies on multi-function devices were the order of the day. The digital divide between urban and rural India could be bridged by providing quality education and appropriate skill enhancement to rural communities.

Honoris causa degrees were conferred on Dr. Anil Kohli, President, Dental Council of India, and Chairman, Commission for Education, Asia Pacific and Commonwealth Countries; film director Shankar and actor Vijay during the convocation. A total of 925 undergraduate degrees and 305 masters degrees were conferred on students.
