READY FOR DESPATCH: The reconditioned coaches of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway at the Goldenrock Workshop in Tiruchi on Tuesday.
TIRUCHI: The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, which enjoys the heritage status granted by the UNESCO, will soon see on its track wooden coaches of the earlier era replaced with sturdy, yet, aesthetic ones providing better comfort, improved safety and better view of the mountains. The Goldenrock Workshop here, which overhauls, maintains and reconditions the coaches, has revamped four out of the first batch of 10 coaches with funds provided by the Railway Board in consideration of NMR’s special status. The other six have already been taken up for body work. Further improvements would be made based on customer feedback. All coaches running on the 47-km MG track would be revamped at a cost of Rs. 2 crore, Chief Workshop Manager S. Rangarajan told mediapersons on Tuesday. Getting a steel-bodied design vetted by the Integral Coach Factory design team to optimise the weight for optimum strength, the Goldenrock Workshop has manufactured the shells right from underframe stage knocking all the wooden bodied structure. Similar to new generation automobiles, poly urethane painting with metallic shades has been given on exteriors for exotic looks and long life without fading; and the interior furnishing is aesthetic and decorative with almost screw-less panelling using teak beading. The other features are decorative stainless grills and canopy arrangements at brakesman area; heat insulation on sidewalls and ceiling; large size light weight windows with sun control film; ergonomically designed seating arrangement; fire retardant upholstery, cushion, wood laminates and vinyl flooring; public address and music systems, decorative compact fluorescent lights in the place of ordinary incandescent bulbs; and mobile phone charging facility.
