CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government told the Madras High Court that the number of engineering seats meant for Plus Two vocational category students had been increased from 700 to 2,400.
A submission to this effect was made by Additional Government Pleader (Education) V. Viswanathan, when a writ petition filed by a student seeking enhancement in the sanctioned intake came up for admission before Justice V. Dhanapalan.
The Judge, recording the statement of the law officer, who also furnished a copy of a Government Order dated August 21, disposed of the writ petition.
In his petition, J. Velmurugan of Cuddalore district submitted that despite the increase in the number of vocational category courses and students at Plus Two level, as well as that of engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, the number of seats reserved in engineering courses for this category continued to remain 700.
Beneficial for rural students
Pointing out that vocational stream students pursued mostly engineering education after Plus Two, the petitioner said increasing the intake would benefit students from rural areas.
The Governmsent Order said the Government had decided to increase the number of seats to at least 4 per cent of the about 60,000 available engineering seats.
It would work out to 2,400 seats, of which 700 have already been filled during centralised counselling, the order read.
