Designers showcase Divaart, Baya, Nirvana and MontySally creations at the event

Cool and casual: Models show off garments and accessories at the Fusion Fashion Show held in Puducherry.

PUDUCHERRY: Whites with pretty floral patterns, blacks that make you look slimmer by a few kilos, elegant clothes that you can wear at home, cocktail dresses with Swaroski stones and customised corsettes, these garments and more were showcased at the Fusion Fashion Show that was put together by Alchemy - The Concept Store at Alliance Franciase’s Maison Colombani.

Garments from Divaart, Baya and Nirvana from Puducherry and MontySally from Goa were presented to the audience, which went crazy over the clothes, bags, slippers, make-up and hair styles that were tastefully showcased at the event.

Praveen Saldanha, who answers to his pet name, MontySally, and whose clothesline is named after him, presented some interesting corsettes.

MontySally’s touch

“My shows are basically more about cuts and less about making the garments rich. I work with materials like glass and acrylic.

“I look at the colours and psychology of garments, and I customise a lot for plus-size clients.

“My previous collection was called the Cirque de Lumiere or circles of light, and it was about fabrics that let light pass through and materials that reflect light,” said this young designer.

He is a commerce graduate, who was interested in fashion design. He retails his clothes in Goa and will soon have them in Bangalore.

His website, www.montysally.com , has more details for those who are interested in his creations.

From Divaart

A design graduate from Delhi NIFT, Divya M Goswami, whose brand is called Divaart, makes apparels and accessories.

“I do everything from bags and sandals to jewellery and garments with wood, ceramic, copper and silver wire so as to not to get bored.

“This year I have been doing wedding clothes, for which the fits and cuts have to be very well done.

“For the fashion show I designed clothes keeping Puducherry and its weather in mind. I outsourced beads and shells that were collected from the shores of Puducherry and took very simple crushed cotton fabric that I got here,” says Divya.

She has made beautiful kaftans and long tunics, which are comfortable and elegant for the fashion-conscious who would like to make a style statements with the garments they choose to wear.

Sabine’s work

The creator of Nirvana Boutique is Sabine, who after learning fashion designing in Paris was inspired during her first visit to India by the diversity of its people, colours and fabrics.

She started her own workshop in Puducherry, where she produces a variety of garments, accessories and home decor.

Baya’s

Baya is Alchemy’s inhouse brand, which was launched by Anjali Schiavina in 2004. The Cherry Blossom Collection, Rose Collection and Wild Flowers Collection - all in white - were Baya’s marks at the show.

“We work with linens and georgette, which is a silk fabric with a soft fall.

“We have concentrated on three collections in white linked to nature with a flower element that had zardosi embroidery and aari work.

“The first half had the Pret collection, a ready to wear casual collection,” says Anjali, highlighting the finer points of her work.

“In the second half we concentrated on black where we used antique sequins.

“In the Cocktail Collection we have used Swaroski stones and pintucks and sleeves. We concentrate on whites and blacks adding just one colour for the spring summer and autumn winter collections,” say Rita Ganguli and Satyavati, who are the designers of Baya.

Alchemy, which is situated at 34, Francois Martin Street, Kuruchikuppam has a sale which is scheduled to go on till September 10.
