Beijing: Onam celebrations have reached the Chinese shores with Malayalis spreading the cheer and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao joining them with his wishes. “I wish to convey greetings to the people of Kerala on the occasion of Onam,” he said when told by a PTI correspondent here during an interview on Monday that ‘Thiru Onam’ was being celebrated in his home State. Keralites in Beijing celebrated the festival under the auspices of Beijing Malayalee Association in which Indian Ambassador Nirupama Rao, who hails from Kerala, was the chief guest. A Chinese woman married to a Keralite businessman was a prominent participant in this year’s celebrations. “I love the food and the Malayali culture,” the woman, Miao Shenyen, said. — PTI
