Five Indians advance

Avinash Nair

VASCO: It was the day of reckoning for the pretenders from the contenders and there are five Indians from the eight entrants in the round of 32 that commences tomorrow, in the Vascon-Manisha IBSF World Under-21 snooker championship.

At the Bogmallo Beach Resort here on Tuesday, the eight seeds in the knock-out phase of the championship were identified with Passakorn Suwannawat of Thailand heading the contenders.

India’s Arantxa Sanchis humbled Lavanya Bhaskaran 3-0 to consolidate her position in the semifinals line-up. Arantxa, the diminutive Engineering student from Mumbai, outclassed higher seeded Lavanya with better potting and shrewder snookers. Aakanksha Singh finished at the bottom of the nine-player league, losing even to 11-year old Keerat Bhandaal.

No sparkle

The match between Daniel Wells of Wales and Yu Delu the Chinese failed to provide the sparkle. The Chinese produced a break of 68 in the first frame and one expected a thriller in the offing, but Welshman Daniel Wells shut him out of the contest with some superb potting and fantastic control over the cue ball.
