NEW DELHI: Commonwealth Games silver medallist Vijender stormed into the final with an emphatic win over Delhi’s Ashok in the 75kg category, in the National boxing championship at the Karnail Singh Stadium here on Tuesday. Vijender, who is to receive the Arjuna Award from the President on Wednesday, fought two bouts in a space of four hours. Vijender first defeated Kuldeep of Punjab in a referee stopped contest in the second round and then left for Rashtrapati Bhawan to complete the protocol formalities for Wednesday’s ceremony. Vijender, then returned to pound Ashok with his left-right combination to win in the second round. The results: Semifinal: 75kg: Vijender (Rlys) bt Ashok (Del) RSC (OS) II. Quarterfinals: 48kg: Balbir (Rlys) bt Salman (Mah) 22-9, Sanjay (Ser) bt K. Chiranjeevi (AP) RSC (OS) III, Venkat Raman (Kar) bt Amit (Har) 22-20, Bishwajeet (Assam Rifles) bt Shankar (Asm) 29-16. 51kg: H. K.
