Gogoi launches employment mission

Sushanta Talukdar

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday launched a Rs. 669 crore Employment Generation Mission, aimed at generating employment opportunities for 1,67,000 people.

To kickstart the Mission, Mr. Gogoi handed over cheques to six organisations — three Government and three Non-Government — which would undertake projects for providing employment opportunities to 9,000 people.

The Employment Generation Mission, constituted on March 19 and registered as a society, was based on the recommendations of Jayanta Madhab Committee. The State Government had constituted the committee headed by noted economist Dr. Jayanta Madhab to undertake a study and recommend measures for generating substantial and sustainable employment opportunities in Assam within a timeframe of three years.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister stressed on the need for changing mindset of the people and make them realise that unemployment could be solved only through self- employment and not by Government jobs. State Chief Secretary P.C. Sarma said that there were about 20 lakh unemployed people in Assam.

Dr. Mahdab said that besides unemployment, there is an added challenge of under employment. He said skill-building would be the main emphasis of the Mission so as to make the trained persons capable of seeking wage employment or engaging themselves in self-employment.
