BEIJING: German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday reiterated her adherence to the one-China policy, adding she would never provide platform for pro-independence separatist forces in Taiwan. In a speech to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ms. Merkel said remarkable progress had been made in strengthening Sino-German relations in the past 35 years, and expressed her confidence in closer bilateral ties. Ms. Merkel said Germany and China, as two big, influential countries, should take responsibility to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. She appreciated China’s efforts to save energy and reduce emissions, adding her country was willing to share expertise in energy consumption and technologies with China. In July, the Chinese government announced its first national action plan to respond to climate change and set the goal of reducing energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product by 20 per cent and major pollutant discharges by 10 per cent by the end of 2010. Premier Wen Jiabao told Ms. Merkel on Monday that China had shown its determination to meet these extremely difficult targets. Ms. Merkel called for continued frank exchanges between the two countries, particularly concerning trade and the protection of intellectual property rights. — Xinhua
