MOSCOW: Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin’s granddaughter Galina Dzhugashvili passed away here following prolonged illness. She was 69. She died on Monday evening at Burdnko military hospital here, according to reports. Galina was the only child of Stalin’s son Yakov, who reportedly died in 1941 in the war against Nazi Germany. However, according to an official version based on Nazi photographs, Yakov was taken prisoner and died in 1943 in a German concentration camp. Recently, Galina had argued that her father was never taken prisoner by the Germans. In an interview in Komsomolskaya Pravda, she was quoted as claiming that Yakov died in battle in 1941. — PTI
