Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday discussed “fundamental issues” related to a two-state solution of the West Asia problem, as they met to prepare the ground for a major peace summit in November. “They spoke about fundamental issues, about how to arrive at the solution of two states for two peoples,” said an Israeli government spokesman here. “The meeting was very open, positive and constructive.” It was the first time the two leaders discussed contentious matters like final borders, Jerusalem and Palestinian refugees in depth, said another official. As he headed into the one-one-one talks, that followed deliberations by teams of aides, Mr. Abbas said meetings with the purpose of “declaration of principles” are a “waste of time” and called for discussions on final status issues. “If there is a clear framework including final status, we will welcome this and go to the conference,” he said. — PTI
