LNG import terminal at Ennore in the pipeline U.S. firm offers technology support
NEW DELHI: In another first to its name, State-run utility Indian Oil Corporation IOC) has embarked on a technology innovation by commissioning a pilot project offering ‘LNG at the doorstep’ for use in captive power and industrial furnace applications. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a cryogenic liquid fuel with high energy density and is the purest form of natural gas. The new initiative has been introduced with technology support from Chart Industries of the U.S. It offers LNG to customers located away from natural gas pipelines at their doorstep. Officials in IOC said this new technology could cater to the huge unfulfilled requirements of natural gas customers in areas not connected by pipeline. B. M. Bansal, Director, (Planning & Business Development), who spearheaded the ‘LNG at the doorstep’ project, said it was only the first among many technology innovations LNG marketing was likely to see in India. An LNG import terminal at Ennore near Chennai and city gas distribution projects are in the pipeline in partnership with GAIL (India) and Great Eastern Energy Corporation.
