St. Joseph’s College of Enginnering triumphs

WINNERS: St. Joseph’s Engineering College, which clinched the ball badminton title.

CHENNAI: St. Joseph’s College of Engineering clinched the ball badminton title in the Bertram memorial tournaments here on Monday.

Involved in a three-way tie with St. Joseph’s College (Tiruchi) and Loyola College, St. Joseph’s CE came up trumps on set average.

After the semifinal league, the three teams had two wins each. In the first elimination criteria, which is decided on number of sets won and lost, Loyola lost out. St. Joseph’s (Tiruchi) and St. Joseph’s CE were tied with six (sets) wins and three (sets) loses.

In the second elimination — set average — criteria, St. Joseph’s (Tiruchi) had only +46 to St. Joseph’s CE’s +56.

Other results: Basketball quarterfinals: Loyola Whites 57 (Babu 12) bt St. Peter’s HSS 31 (Yuvaraj 13); GRD College (Cbe) 55 (Mohan Kumar 23) bt Loyola Yellows 31; Sathyabama Deemed University 76 (Milton 15, Shindob 10, Hakeem 12 ) bt MCC 32 (R. Prasanna 13).

Sundar-Sitaram pair wins

K. Sundar and C.R. Sitaraman (+6 points on better back nine) won the President’s Shield golf tournament at Madras Gymkhana Golf Annexe here recently.

Other results: President’s Shield: 2. K. Kumaran & H.R. Srinivasan (+6). Bharath Association/RSMANI Cup: 1. D. Ponkumar & K. Srinivasan (62 nett), 2. V.J. Bharath & B. Jaiganesh (65). Putting competition: 1. P.S. Jagdish & V. Sanjay Kumar (28 putts).

Manoj posts win

Manoj Chacko (TC) beat Suresh (SS) 58-22, 52-21 in the MUC-Non medallist snooker tournament here on Monday.

Athletics meet

Tiruvannamalai District Athletic Association will conduct the 80th State senior championship on September 6 and 7 at SDAT, District Sports Complex (Collectorate Office Campus), here.

Nearly 800 athletes from Southern Railway, State Police, Commando Police, Armed Reserve, Indian Bank, St. Joseph’s Prime Sports Academy, ICF and all districts from Tamil Nadu will be seen in action. Those selected from this meet will take part in the 47th National and inter-State championship at Bhopal from Sept. 17 to 20.

Sports meet celebrated

Vailankanni MHSS (Avadi) celebrated its sports meet recently. Alaudeen, Head, Vailankannai College of Education inaugurated the meet. A. Narayanan, Assistant Commissioner of Police, gave away the prizes.
