This Day That Age
Dr. Homi J. Bhabha, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, told the Congress Parliamentary Party’s Standing Committee on Atomic Energy in New Delhi that India would be in a position to set up its first atomic power station in 1962 if work was begun next year. He addressed the inaugural meeting of the Committee, constituted recently with Mr. D.C. Sharma as convener to study problems of developing atomic energy for peaceful purposes. Prime Minister Nehru also attended the meeting. Dr. Bhabha said that by and large hydel power would be more economical than power produced from coal or atom. Atomic stations were, however, useful in regions where there was no water or where long haulage of coal was involved. There were several such regions in India where atomic power stations would be justified.
