This Day That Age
Mr. Braj Raj Singh, deputy leader of the Socialist group in the Lok Sabha, was warned by the Speaker, Mr. M. Ananthasayanam Iyengar, on August 27 that if he referred to an adjournment motion on a certain subject on the floor of the House, “I will be compelled to send him out of the House.” Mr. Braj Raj Singh had just risen to refer to the subject when the Speaker made this remark. He said, “This member sent me an adjournment motion and it was a State subject. But he had written to me, ‘If you do not give consent, I may be compelled to raise it in the House.’ If he is compelled to raise it in the House, I will be compelled to send him out of the House.” Mr. Iyengar said he would like the House to conduct its work normally but if any member “threatened” him in this manner, what was he to do? The matter sought to be raised by the member was purely a State subject. The time of the Lok Sabha should not be spent on such matters. Mr. Braj Raj Singh protested but submitted to the ruling of the Chair.
