Such incidents make me wonder if Indian democracy is only for the fortunate few of society. Is it the lot of the oppressed and the poor to be treated in such fashion? Human rights organisations will condemn the matter and the national media will air it for a few days. Then things will die down. And, we have a sound explanation for this: “Public memory is short. We are like that only.” Jagdish Chander, Bangalore The repetitive replay of the shameful incident reflects the malicious pleasure the visual media get out of airing such incidents. What hurt was the way a woman (possibly the one whose chain was snatched) watched, with no expression of pain, Salim being beaten up. T.S. Gopal, Chennai
