Court directs arrest of Congress MP

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: A Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the re-arrest of Congress Member of Parliament Adhir Chowhdury and 13 others in connection with the murder of a restaurant owner and his son in Behrampore in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district in July 2005.

Acquitted in May

Mr. Chowdhury was arrested on the same charge but acquitted by a lower court in May.

Public Prosecutor Asimesh Goswami challenged the legality and propriety of the order of acquittal. He sought re-arrest of those acquitted.

The Division Bench, comprising Justices Amit Talukdar and Arun Bhattacharya took up the appeal and ordered the re-arrest.

They should be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Behrampore.

The appeal against the acquittal would also be heard, the Bench said.

The police in Behrampore were instructed to round up the persons concerned.

Mr. Chowdhury, one of the six Congress MPs from the State, is at present is in New Delhi as Parliament is in session.
